Grade School

Cornerstone Christian Academy offers a well-rounded Kindergarten to Grade 7 education program in accordance to the BC Education Plan core and curricular competencies as the basis of our curriculum. The program includes many opportunities for students to participate in project-based learning, to experience inspiring and challenging units of study taught from a Christian perspective, and engage in activities that allow them to develop 21st century skills. CCA recognizes that each child is made in the image of God and has the ability and potential to learn and be successful to the fullest extent of their capacity, given the appropriate environment, opportunities, and encouragement.

Throughout all grade levels, there is a strong emphasis on the building of important Language Arts skills such as phonics, reading comprehension, spelling, writing, penmanship, and communication. A special reading program is used at every grade to encourage daily reading and practice reading comprehension skills. Students are challenged to read at their grade level and beyond!

Math skills are taught and reinforced across the grades to build up a solid foundation in numeracy. One major focus of the mathematics program is the development of problem-solving skills and strategies.  Numeracy skills are further developed and challenged through online Math programs, which are geared towards both students who are more advanced and those who need the extra practice.

Science and Social Studies are the additional subjects that form the core of our academic program. Students are given hands on opportunities to learn about different topics in each of these areas. As students enter into the Intermediate grades, they will incorporate their learning with projects to develop research and presentation skills. These skills are developed in depth in Grade 4-7 as students engage in inquiry based learning, through their participation in Richmond’s annual Heritage Fair.

French is taught in grades four to seven. Students are first introduced to French through the AIM program which focuses on their speaking skills. In the later grades, students will focus more on their grammar and vocabulary.

Our Music program begins at the early primary grades and introduces some basic components of music such as singing, rhythm, and theory. In the intermediate grades, students expand on their basic music skills, and learn various musical instruments such as recorders, ukuleles, and guitars. Our students have the opportunity to participate in multi-grade Christmas and Spring performances.

Bible classes and daily devotions are an integral part of the Christian Education experience offered at CCA. Biblical studies provide the basis for character building and for developing a deeper understanding of who God is and how to walk in relationship with Him. Students also participate in Bible memory work, and attend weekly Chapel sessions for a time of Bible teaching, praise, and worship.

Students are also taught Physical Education & Health, Art, Career Education, and Applied Design Skills & Technology.

Outdoor Education Program

In grades 6 and 7, students participate in an outdoor education program that focuses on developing leadership and life skills through activities such as hiking, orienteering, snowboarding/skiing, and kayaking,. These activities will challenge the students’ body and mind. The students also learn how to interact socially, responsibly, and respectfully with the community. This program provides a healthy balance to the students’ academic learning at the Academy.

LIBRARY

The Library at Cornerstone Christian Academy prevails as an integral part of the educational program and as an extenuation of the classroom.

Opportunity for students is provided through library interaction:

  • to become thoughtful users of information

  • to acquire and practice information-finding skills

  • to garner a Love for Reading

A Theme which changes yearly, the Library, artistically decorated to match the theme, a Reading Slogan and Literacy Game generated from the Library inspires students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 to participate enthusiastically in our School-Wide Reading Program. The Love of Reading is firmly established as students relish in the environment of a library that transports them to imaginary lands.

The Library at Cornerstone Christian Academy provides a host of benefits directed toward creating our future college and career ready students.  Readers Are Leaders!

Resource Centre

We have a dedicated Resource Centre team to provide assistance to students who may need additional support in certain areas of their education. Our Resource Centre staff works one-on-one and within the classroom with students, in close communication with the classroom teacher and parents, to focus on their specific needs.

Character Building

We are committed to helping children grow in their knowledge and appreciation of Biblical principles and values through Chapel time, in class Bible times and integration of Christian principles into the daily curriculum.

Students are also taught the importance of giving and helping those in need. The Academy has been involved with charity programs to help those in need globally and locally in the Richmond community.
